Possibly the best March night here since 2011, with over 230 moths of 20 species recorded. Most numerous was Common Quaker (80) followed by Small Quaker (57) and then Hebrew Character (35). Common Quaker appears to have had a better breeding / wintering season than Hebrew Character. NFY were Engrailed (2), Double-striped Pug and Brindled Beauty. Two Ypsolopha mucronella were notable as were 15 Oak Beauty.

The temperature here went from 6C at 8pm down to 2C at midnight and back to 6C by dawn, with heavy mist in the early hours. We found what looked like a small hummingbird hovering around a hyacinth outside our window this morning. Knowing that we do not have birds that small in this country and with a little bit of detective work we have identified it as a hummingbird - hawk moth.
